Ministers of the Word
The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.
A lector lends his or her voice to God, proclaiming Sacred Scripture to the people gathered for Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Through reading, study, practice, and prayer, a lector brings new life and understanding to the proclaimed word—and grows in relationship with God.
Only those are to discharge these duties who can do so to the edification of the hearers.
Those who wish to serve must be in full communion with the Catholic Church, attend a formation workshop, regardless of prior experience, and become certified to proclaim Sacred Scripture to the assemblies. This commission is for a prescribed period and must be renewed periodically.
