FUNERAL MINISTRY

The Funeral Ministry Coordinator works with individuals/families at the time of loss of a loved one, as well as the mortuary that has been engaged by the family of the deceased.

A date is established for the desired service, as well as the priest who will preside. Contact is then made with those, either in the English-speaking or Spanish-speaking community, who will assist with the service, i.e., the Ministry Team assisting with Mass, the Accompanist for music, and those who will set up the Mass environment in the church, as well as the welcoming area in the vestibule.

The Coordinator works with the family of the deceased to complete the necessary biographical paperwork of the deceased for the priest who will celebrate the Funeral Mass. A Funeral Mass planner is also created to identify music, readings, and any other details necessary to celebrate the life of the deceased.

If a burial is local, the priest will accompany the family to the cemetery for either inurnment or interment.

An email is also sent to our Friends of the Family, inviting them to attend the upcoming Funeral Mass in support of the family of the deceased.

In situations where there is no Funeral Mass, the Coordinator may work with a family for a Graveside Service at the cemetery, or a Mortuary Service at a specific Funeral Home, followed by burial.

On November 2nd, All Souls Day (or a date in close proximity), during a celebrated Mass, the names of those who have passed away within the last year are read aloud to the congregation, accompanied by an intoned bell. Names of the deceased are recorded in a special book for this occasion of recognition.
